The Green Wall Urban Farming initiative encourages people to use the walls of their homes to plant vegetables such as upo, patola, ampalaya, and string beans.

“Through Discovery Channel programming, we are inspiring Filipino viewers and motivating them to learn more about the world and this includes embracing ideas about how we can care for our environment better,” said Jacque Ruby of Access, the local representative for Discovery Channel.

GK Jack & Jill Village is the 2nd Gawad Kalinga community to adopt the Urban Farming activity with a goal to provide nutritious food to the residents.

Jose Luis Oquinena, Executive Director of Gawad Kalinga, said the partnership is very timely and also increases the program’s effect on the community. Discovery Channel and GK are gearing up for more joint initiatives in the future.Continue reading

Pinoy Fast Food Chain helps Zambales’ Aeta Communities

On the way to the site where native food chain Binalot Fiesta Foods obtains some of its banana leaves, President and CEO Rommel Juan is getting a crash course on dealing with Aeta tribesmen. “Apparently they prefer to be called ‘kulot’ (curly) instead of Aeta,” he says. “I’m surprised. In Manila we always thought it was a derogatory term.”

Juan is visiting the second site of his DAHON (Dangal at Hanapbuhay Para sa Nayon) Program, which sources leaves directly from farmers instead of going through middlemen. “Our initial site in Laguna is still active but we’re looking for additional sources,” explains Juan. “We discovered that the highlands here (in Zambales) have a lot of ‘butuan’ banana plants whose fruits are delicious only to birds and bats, which is perfect since we only need leaves.”

The Aeta communities reside near the bananas, which is why Binalot tapped them for the northern DAHON program. But, unlike the Laguna farmers, Juan and company have to contend with a different culture. “Sa Nagcarlan wala lang silang opportunities,” (In Nagcarlan they just have less opportunities) explains Juan “we only needed to train them to use the resources they have. Here, most of them are content with subsistence farming.”Continue reading

Skycable and AFC’s Eats Asia 2 at NBC Tent

from Animetric’s World

I’ve been a super loyal Skycable subscriber since they acquired Home Cable back in 2001. Ever so often, Skycable would host special events. Invites would be distributed by phone, you’d have to be among the first 25, 50, 75, or 100 callers to reserve. The number would depend on the type of event and venue.

I attended one such event at the NBC Tent last August 7, 2010 — Skycable and Asian Food Channel’s
